Khevsureti – Town Fortress

Short description

Located in 150 kms from the capital Shatili is the central settlement in the beautiful mountainous region of Khevsureti. The road to Shatili is very beautiful, here traveler never gets bored. At first you pass Jinvali water reservoir. Glittering lights on dark blue water catches the eye of the traveler. Soon the road is built along the fits Aragvi river gorge which gets to Datvisjvari pass located on 2677 meters above the sea level. Here most probably you will stop to have a short break and enjoy the views of the valley below. From here the road goes downhill into the metamorphic world of deserted villages, military towers, and stone made fortress-settlements and waterfalls. In an hour or so we get to Shatili settlement known for its unique architecture. It actually represents a set of individual houses each made as separate fortress and built next to each other. The visitor can go through the entire village the way that his/her pass won’t be visible for the outsider. Concealed internal narrow streets and wide houses ensure safety of the residents of the settlement. The founders of Shatili settlement had to build their residential houses like fortresses due to lots of enemies used to intrude into the Argun gorge from Dagistan, Chechnia-Ingushetia over the centuries.
